Why Steps Are Hard
Pool steps combine changing heights, tight corners, and often a bench or seat. A robot needs both the traction to climb onto each step and the navigation smarts to recognize and work the area rather than sliding off. Lightweight, random-path budget robots frequently bump the bottom step and move on, leaving the stairs dirty.
What Cleans Steps Well
Look for robots with:
- Strong wall-climbing ability and good brush traction — the same qualities that solve not climbing walls
- Gyroscopic or mapping navigation that deliberately targets steps
- Sometimes a dedicated step or stair cleaning mode
