Dolphin ADVANTAGE ULTRA Review

An In-Depth Review by Robert Knight

Introduction

The Dolphin ADVANTAGE ULTRA, hailing from the esteemed Dolphin Advantage line, is a robotic pool cleaner that commands attention through its enviable features and impeccable long-term performance. As established from a prolonged three-month testing period, this robot has more than proven its worth in the competitive field of pool cleaners.
This remarkable robot seamlessly blends functionality, efficiency, and reliability, separating itself from the rest with its unrivaled cleaning capabilities. Equipped with advanced algorithms for systematic scanning and cleaning, it ensures your pool is free from dust, leaves, debris, and algae, leaving it sparkling clean.
Notably, the Dolphin ADVANTAGE ULTRA is not just about functionality—it embodies remarkable convenience and ease-of-use. Automated scheduling, superior filtration, effortless handling—the list runs long when it comes to user-friendly features that make the ADVANTAGE ULTRA an unbeatable choice.
Though the Dolphin ADVANTAGE ULTRA stands its ground in its performance and reliability, for those seeking a different cleaning experience, we strongly recommend the Dolphin Proline, part of the newer Dolphin Max-Series. These robust cleaners have impressed us repeatedly with their cutting-edge features and cleaning abilities, rivaling even the best in the ADVANTAGE line.

Pool Types

The Dolphin Advantage Ultra robotic pool cleaner is specifically designed for in-ground swimming pools, with an optimal cleaning range of up to 40 feet. This makes it an ideal choice for medium to large-sized pool owners who want complete peace of mind when it comes to maintaining a spotless swimming experience. The machine is not restrictive in terms of pool construction materials, boasting a versatile cleaning competence for various types such as Gunite, Fiberglass, Vinyl, and Liner.
Apart from functioning impressively with different surfaces, the Dolphin Advantage Ultra doesn't discriminate when it comes to pool shape. It is designed with adaptive navigation and cleaning algorithms that make it fully capable of handling Rectangle, Oval, or Freeform shaped pools. Whether you own a traditional rectangular pool or something more intricate like a kidney-shaped or freeform design, the Dolphin Advantage Ultra navigates with ease, never missing a spot.
In essence, the Dolphin Advantage Ultra brings a comprehensive and hassle-free pool cleaning solution for a wide range of in-ground pools. So no matter your pool's size, shape, or construction material, this robotic cleaner will ensure you have a pristine and swim-ready pool at all times.

Pool Coverage

Dolphin Advantage Ultra stands out owing to its comprehensive cleaning coverage. It's been intelligently designed to tackle not only floor surfaces but extends its prowess to walls and even the waterline. What truly sets it apart is its versatility to clean any pool shape, beyond just flat surfaces.

Whether you have a standard rectangular pool or a more complex free-form shape, the Dolphin Advantage Ultra works seamlessly. It has an impressive ability to adapt, guaranteeing cleanliness across every inch of your pool. Even if your pool present slopes or steps, the Dolphin Advantage Ultra will leave your swimming pool spotless.

In conclusion, by choosing the Dolphin Advantage Ultra, you're investing in a robotic pool cleaner that ensures absolute cleanliness with its remarkable floor, wall, and waterline coverage. Regardless of your pool's shape, its thorough cleaning coverage is unmatched in today's market.

Filtration

The Dolphin ProLine boasts a breakthrough technology– the NanoFiltration ability. This feature stood out remarkably during my assessment, as it exhibited a cleaning depth that no other pool robot I've tested has ever achieved. The ProLine collects and retains the smallest of particles, ensuring your pool is crystal clear and immaculate down to the microscopic level.
Indeed, what was astonishing was the manner in which the filth was handled. My firsthand experience with the ProLine left me in awe. As opposed to other pool robots that merely collect dirt only to dislodge them when cleaning is halted, the ProLine efficiently retains the collected micro-debris until it is manually emptied.
Seeing this level of detail and effectiveness, I am inclined to say that the NanoFiltration feature is a game-changer in the pool cleaning industry. It not only arms the Dolphin ProLine with an edge over other robots but also reinstates the fact that innovative solutions in robotics can make a significant consumer experience difference.
So, if you're on the quest for a pool cleaner that leaves no stone unturned, literally and figuratively, the Dolphin ProLine's NanoFiltration feature is worthy of your consideration. It has given a new definition to cleanliness and has raised the bar in pool cleaning excellence.

Cleaning Performance

Upon our initial test, the Dolphin Premier immediately stood out among the competition, performing impressively in our test pools. From its superior suction ability to its unparalleled maneuverability, there was no challenge too great for this Robotic Pool Cleaner during our tests.
The Dolphin Premier showcased an exceptional ability to navigate around the pool and clean every nook and corner efficiently. During our tests, it maintained a consistent cleaning pattern, leaving no part of the pool unattended or needing second passes. This efficiency, combined with its robust build and precision control, truly makes for an impressive cleaning companion.
One of the key features we were interested in was the Dolphin Premier's power and how effectively it can handle debris. To our delight, it surpassed our expectations, proving to be exceptionally adept at sucking up everything in its path, including stubborn dirt and leaves. The robot’s powerful dual motors added to its impressive performance, leaving our test pool sparkling clean each time.
However, our tests wouldn't be complete without testing the robot's durability and longevity. After several weeks of regular use, we were pleased to find the Dolphin Premier still maintaining peak performance, a testament to its solid build quality and excellent componentry.
Lastly, our experiments with the Dolphin Premier's programmability features such as the weekly timer were another highlight. The ability to set it and forget it, assured us of its ability to maintain clean pools with minimal intervention. Link to review:Read the full review here.

Cordless

There's a reason we tend to favor corded robots in our reviews: their reliability and consistent performance are second to none. When you're dealing with pool cleanup, you want a robot that's always ready to dive in and get the job done without needing a break or recharge.
After testing more than 100 different robotic pool cleaners, we've found time and time again that corded robots tout superior performance compared to their cordless counterparts. They draw constant power, which in turn churns out consistent cleaning power and speed, while cordless models often struggle to keep up mid-way due to battery constraints.
In fact, no one wants to babysit their pool cleaners, and a major downfall of cordless models lies exactly in this inconvenience. They require daily interaction for recharging - an undesired chore for most pool owners. Contrastingly, with a corded robot, you're afforded the luxury of setting a weekly timer.
Moreover, the long-term lifespan of corded robotic pool cleaners proves commendable. Unlike cordless pool cleaners that significantly downgrade over time due to the continuous cycle of using and recharging batteries, corded pool cleaners persistently operate at their peak potential, making them an excellent long-term investment for maintaining your pool.

Weekly Timer

A fundamental feature of a high-performance pool cleaning robot is a weekly timer, a feature that enables superior automation and reduces the hassle of daily interaction. With a weekly timer, users can set their cleaner to operate at intervals within the week, making pool maintenance less stressful and more time-efficient. Not all robots, unfortunately, are equipped with this highly useful feature, which is often to their detriment.
Units without weekly timersrequire more manual input, which detracts from their convenience. This is because users will have to run the cleaner each day manually. It's a noticeable deficit in comfort compared to their timer-equipped counterparts.
On the other hand, one of the undeniable benefits of a lightweight and resourceful automatic pool cleaner is when it's equipped with that beautiful feature: the weekly timer. These are the kind of pool cleaners that allow you to truly relax and enjoy your pool's crystal-clear waters without the worry or fuss of regular interaction.
In sum, it's our firm belief that all pool robots should integrate a weekly timer option for the best user experience. The advantage it provides in automation and reducing routine maintenance cannot be overstated. If it's not fitted with a weekly timer, the pool cleaner might still do an excellent job, but it invariably demands more of your attention.

Overview

The Dolphin Advantage Ultra undeniably stakes its claim as a remarkable robotic pool cleaner. From features such as the weekly timer, which automates the cleaning routine, to its powerful, corded design, it genuinely sets a high standard for pool cleaning efficiency. This model specializes in-depth cleaning, practically scouring your pool from surface to finish. With its smart navigation, it doesn't miss a spot while cleaning, ensuring all areas including the floor, walls, and waterlines are meticulously cleaned. What’s more exciting here is the incorporation of the top-loading massive twin cartridges. In short, with the Dolphin Advantage Ultra, you're investing in reliable cleaning power that doesn't require constant interaction or recharging. Having evaluated it, I'd place it far above the average rank, with a score well over 90. This high rating is due to its advanced features, exceptional performance, especially its ability to get the job done without any fuss. However, like anything, it has a few imperfections too. The issues are far from deal-breaking, and certainly don't detract from its overall performance, but they are worth considering. Some users have reported a few negative instances where the cleaner had trouble with larger debris. Rest assured, these experiences are not universal, and the vast majority of users report fantastic results. In conclusion, the Dolphin Advantage Ultra is among the top contenders in the high-end range of robotic pool cleaners. It delivers excellent value for its price tag, making it a worthwhile investment for anyone seeking to maintain a sparkling clean pool with minimum effort. For those seeking other options, check out our best robotic pool cleaners article, featuring a wide range of brands and models.
Finally, a massive thumbs-up to Maytronics for designing such high-performing workhorse! And for those particularly interested in the Dolphin brand, they might also find the Dolphin Premier, Sigma, Quantum, Cayman, and Escape models very appealing. Each model offers unique features and meets different user needs, so it's worth exploring these before making a final decision.

Recommendation

After extensively studying and experimenting with various robotic pool cleaners, we wholeheartedly recommend the Max-Series and ProLine robots from Dolphin. Particularly, the Dolphin Premier and the Dolphin Sigma have proven to be extraordinary in their class. It's evident from their high-quality design to their unmatched efficiency, they promise to make your pool cleaning errands a breeze.
You can read detailed reviews about these robots by following these links: Dolphin Premier Review and Dolphin Sigma Review.
If your preference leans towards the ProLine robots, we guarantee you won't be disappointed with our number one pick, the Dolphin Quantum. This robot stands out not only by its superior cleaning performance but also by the value it offers in terms of advanced features and durability. For a complete analysis of this product, refer to our Dolphin Quantum Review.
Last but not least the lesser-known but still highly efficient Dolphin Cayman and Dolphin Escape also make the cut. Excellente!

Aaron - Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 9, 2021

This thing is absolutely awesome. This is my first robot vac, so I can’t compare it to the many other units available, but for us it’s been a game-changer. It seems as though (after about a month of use) it’s learned our pool, and cleans better than ever now. It was great out of the box, but now it even gets the steps and ledges. Great at climbing the sides and getting above the water line as well. Put it in the pool, press one button, and walk away. When you come back, you’re pool is clean. I obviously can’t speak to the durability/longevity yet, but I will definitely update if there’s an issue. I take it out of the pool when it’s done cleaning because I don’t like the idea of it sitting in chlorinated water all season. It may be fine that way, but I’m erring on the side of caution and babying it due to the price! I’m a healthy, strong adult, so pulling it out of the water is not an issue for me whatsoever. It feels like about 30-40 lbs when you first pull it up, but the water drains out quickly and it lightens up in no time. If you are elderly or weak, that may be an issue for you, but most adults shouldn’t have much trouble. I did a lot of research before buying this model and I’m not disappointed, but I’ll just say that if you’ve never tried a robot vac, get one! This one, or any one is better than vacuuming manually into your skimmer/filter system all the time! I may get through the entire year without having to backwash…

Plug and play (or drink)

Stancoman - Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 4, 2021

If anybody is wondering, it's perfect for a 20 x 40 pool. The cord is long enough keeping the modulator10' from the pool edge as they recommend. No need to ever have to power vac which costs an upwards of $150 each time. Some people make comments that it doesn't climb the walls but if your walls have an incredible amount of algae, even Spider-Man can't climb the walls. I'm using the fine filter for now but am investing the $50 for the ultra fine filter to get the "crystal clear" look to the pool. I highly recommend this and would give it 6 stars if I can. There's no need to pay the extra $300 to control it on your own with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth because it does it on its own. It's easy to use. "Plug and play" (or drink) I say.

It arrived not working, but once we rebuilt it, it works fine

Lorraine Sheehan - Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 21, 2021

When the product arrived it worked for 20 minutes and then stopped. I spent an hour with customer service, who then sent a youtube video for me to watch to fix the machine. It involved unscrewing the housing, taking out the motor and resetting it back into the machine. It did work after that. I got the impression that this happens all the time because the customer service person just started with those instructions about having to take out the motor.

works way better that hayward shark

Ryan M. - Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 28, 2021

delivered next day! that was unexpected. arrived as described - dropped it in the pool and it went to work. I had a hayward shark xl for years but had to replace the pump when the cable connection rusted and shorted. worked for 2 more years and then the motorized gears went. when i dropped the dolphin in the pool the next day, i was amazed at how much sand and fine dirt it picked up a day after the working shark cleaned the whole pool. The dolphin is way more efficient and the cleaning of the basket filters is so much easier. highly recommend this pool cleaner - expensive, but worth the price in my opinion.

This is my first robotic pool cleaner, so I don't really have much to compare it against. I will say that it works just as advertised and has helped me greatly in getting my pool back into great shape after a lot of maintenance was done to my pool (new lines, new filter, new pipe). I love using my Dolphin ( nicknamed 'Dwight') and cleaning is easy as well. I did buy the ultra fine filters just recently and they are worth the extra money. This thing climbs the walls often and seems to cover my whole 16x32 rectangular pool with ease. I will never be without Dwight again.

Bought this unit in May 2021, it worked great for the first season, which is approximately 3 months in my area. Just opened the pool and the unit has problems with starting up. It will roll forward about 3 feet and then stop. Unfortunately, I am just a week past my 1 year "limited" warranty so I'm kinda screwed. These devices should be more robust for the price.

Mine is doing more time thinking than doing ! It moves 3' then twitches left or right and reverses 3' , repeat, repeat. It has made it to the waterline a few times, and shuffles 6". Doing the waterline like this will never do the whole waterline in a year. I chose this one because it did not require a smartphone app. Not sure what to do as I have the Universal caddy and cover on order elsewhere. Not happy is an understatement. With regard to its cleaning ability, I guess it's probably OK, my pool is already clean so difficult to tell

DO NOT BUY!! Does not filter out fine dirt.

Barbara - Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2021

Purchased the product from Doheny pool supply. Purchased it to replace my old Kreepy Krauley that operated on the pools filtration system. The main reason I purchased the product was to reduce the burden on the main DE filtration system I was very disappointed to find out that the robotic cleaner does not really clean your pool. It picks up larger debris like leaves, worms, bugs, etc. but does not remove fine dirt. The fine dirt is blown through the fine screen back into the pool where the pool's main filtration system catches and removes the dirt. The water would become cloudy when I operated the Dolphin Advantage Ultra and is further evidence that the unit was merely re-suspending the fine dirt. It should referred to as a scrubber not a cleaner. That said, I still had to scrub the pools water line even after running the robot for 3-3hour cycles. I contacted product support at Doheny and their response was "I needed to run it longer". DUH!! Running it longer keeps the dirt suspended so that my main DE filter removes the dirt. They also want a 20% re-stocking fee to return the item. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!
